According to the dictionary, a lawyer is defined as, “a person whose profession is to represent clients in a court of law or to advise or act for clients in other legal matters.” In my opinion, there is no right or wrong way to look at a lawyers’ perspective. The bottom line is that they are responsible for fulfilling their duties, regardless of how serious or petty the case is. On the other hand, I would definitely be concerned about the lack of commitment that is shown, and not so much the intentions of specific lawyers. A job is a job no matter where it is or what you are instructed to do. However, I think there is a thin line between good and bad. Some lawyers are in fact corrupt depending on the environment and based on reputation, while others believe in looking out for the best interest of the client which is not settling for less until justice is served. In the eyes of the judge, a second chance for a felon is sometimes considered a possibility. Nevertheless, in the eyes of the opposing lawyer, there is no second guessing behind the point that he or she is trying to prove. It is clearly hard to tell whether they are in fact trying to save a client’s reputation or their own. Two years ago, a friend of mine hired a man that was supposedly one of the best lawyers in New York State. My friend and his family put all of their trust into this individual hoping that he was going to live up to his title. The lawyer thought it would be more suitable for my friend to take the plea bargain of a 15 year sentence in prison, rather than taking it to trial. Even though it was only his first offence, my friend understood that it was strictly business and nothing personal.
